Frequently asked questions
Getting started
How do I start a focus session?
Open the app, tap "Start Session", set your duration and optional pledge, then confirm. Your buddy will be notified automatically.
What is Nomp, in one sentence?
Nomp is a commitment-device app: you stake money or credits on goals, complete them with friends watching, and the people who follow through get rewarded.
Do I need a friend to use Nomp?
No. You can start with solo commits — set a goal, stake an amount, complete it on your own. Buddy and pledge-circle features unlock once you have a connected friend and have completed at least 2 commits (Phase 2).
How long is a typical session?
Free accounts get 15-, 30-, and 60-minute slots. Pro accounts unlock 2-, 4-, and 8-hour deep work sessions. Pick whatever matches the depth of the work you're committing to.
How is Nomp different from a habit tracker?
Habit trackers log what you did; Nomp puts skin in the game before you start. The stake (money, credits, or social standing) makes the difference between intention and follow-through. Behavioural research shows commitment devices roughly triple completion rates vs solo goal-setting.
Sessions & pledges
What happens if I fail a session?
If you fail to complete a session, any pledged amount is forfeited. Nomp retains 30% and the remainder may be awarded to your buddy.
How does a financial pledge work?
When you start a session with a pledge, the staked amount is immediately moved out of your wallet balance into a reserved state. If you complete the session, it's refunded. If you fail, the stake goes into a pool that's split among others who completed the same commit — minus a small platform fee.
What counts as completing a session?
Staying in the app for the full session duration with the timer running. If you swipe away to another app or close Nomp, the session is flagged as quit. Brief background interruptions (e.g. an incoming call you decline within a few seconds) don't count as failure.
What if I get a phone call mid-session?
Answer it. We'll mark the session as 'call_interrupted' which is a soft-fail by default but admins can review the pattern and forgive isolated incidents. Repeated phone-call quits in the same week aren't treated as forgiven.
What if Nomp crashes during my session?
Crashes are detected automatically and tagged as such. If the crash is on our side (verifiable via crash logs), the session is forgiven and the pledge refunded. If it's a forced close from your phone (low memory, you killed the app), it counts as a quit.
What is a pledge circle?
A pledge circle is a multi-buddy commit where each participant stakes their own amount. When the commit resolves, winners (those who completed) split the losers' stakes evenly, minus a 10% platform fee. Available on Pro accounts.
What is the maximum pledge I can stake?
You can stake up to whatever your wallet balance is. Per-session caps exist for safety: $100 maximum on solo sessions, $500 on pledge circles. These can be lowered (never raised) per account via Settings.
How are winnings calculated when buddies fail?
Losing stakes are pooled. We take a 10% platform fee from the pool, then split the remainder evenly among everyone who completed. Any leftover cents from uneven division go to the platform (never shorted from a winner). The full math is shown in your wallet history after the session resolves.
Can I cancel a session after starting it?
Once a session is running, ending it early is treated as a quit and the pledge is forfeited. You can cancel a SCHEDULED future session before it starts — pledge funds reserved for it are returned to your wallet immediately.
What's the difference between a session and a pledge?
A session is the time-bounded commitment (e.g. 30 minutes of focus). A pledge is the optional money you stake on completing that session. You can run sessions without pledges — they just become accountability-only.
Wallet & payments
How do I add money to my wallet?
Go to Wallet in the app, tap "Top Up", and follow the Stripe payment flow. Funds appear instantly.
Can I get a refund on my pledge?
Pledges are only returned if you successfully complete your session. Forfeited pledges cannot be refunded.
Is my payment information secure?
Yes. All payments are processed by Stripe. Nomp never stores your card details.
What can I do with my Nomp wallet?
Stake on commits, accept pledge winnings, and (in supported regions) withdraw to your bank. The wallet exists so the stake mechanism feels immediate — money moves between users when commits resolve without waiting for bank-transfer delays.
What payment methods do you accept for top-ups?
Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover) and Apple Pay on iOS. We process via Stripe — your card details are tokenized and never touch our servers. Google Pay and bank-debit support is on the roadmap.
Is there a minimum or maximum top-up?
Minimum $5, maximum $1,000 per call. You can do multiple top-ups in the same day. Anti-fraud limits may temporarily lower your maximum if recent activity looks unusual; contact support if you hit one.
How long do withdrawals take?
3–5 business days. We review each withdrawal manually to prevent fraud, then dispatch via Stripe Connect or partner banks (Wise, Mercury) depending on the destination country. A 2.5% service fee covers banking costs.
Why was my withdrawal rejected?
Common reasons: account holder name doesn't match your verified identity, the bank country is currently unsupported, or you're below the $5 minimum withdrawal threshold. The rejection email explains the specific reason and you're always free to re-submit with corrections — your wallet balance is never touched on a rejection.
Can I withdraw winnings outside the US?
Currently US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and Kenya. We're adding countries as our banking partner coverage expands. If your country isn't listed, you can still earn winnings — the balance stays in your wallet ready for when withdrawal opens.
Why is my wallet frozen?
Wallets can be frozen for suspected fraud, an open dispute, or an account-level security review. The freeze notice tells you exactly which and links to the appeal flow. We unfreeze as soon as the cause is resolved.
Are my bank details secure?
Yes. Account numbers and routing codes are encrypted at rest using pgcrypto with a key held outside the database. The admin panel shows only the last 4 digits by default; full details require an explicit decrypt action that's audit-logged.
Buddies
How does buddy matching work?
Nomp matches you with an available buddy based on your timezone and session preferences. Pro users get priority matching.
How do I add a friend as a buddy?
From the Connect tab, search for their username or share your invite link from Settings → Invite Friends & earn credits. Both of you confirm, and they become available as a buddy on future commits. You also each earn 50 credits when they sign up via your link.
What does a buddy actually do?
A buddy gets a notification when you start and finish a session. They can cheer you on, witness your completion, and (for Pro pledge circles) hold a supportive stake of their own. They cannot see what you're working on — only that a session is in progress.
Can I remove a buddy?
Yes — open Connect → tap their name → Remove connection. Past sessions and pledges they witnessed stay in your history; only future commits won't involve them.
Subscriptions
How do I cancel my Pro subscription?
Open Settings in the app → Subscription → Cancel. On iOS, cancellations go through the App Store. Your access continues until the end of the billing period.
What do I get with Nomp Pro?
Long-form deep work sessions (2h / 4h / 8h), pledge circles with multiple buddies, archived commit history, custom session names, and exclusive themes. Free users get unlimited solo commits up to 60 minutes.
How much is Pro?
$4.99/month, $11.99/quarter (save 20%), or $39.99/year (save 33%). All plans include a 7-day free trial. Cancel anytime before the trial ends and you're not charged.
Can I pay for Pro with credits?
Yes — 500 credits redeems for one month of Pro, 1,200 credits for three months. The Annual plan is cash-only. Pay-with-credits is processed manually by our team and unlocked within 24 hours.
Do you offer refunds on Pro?
Refunds are handled by Apple (iOS) and Google (Android) directly. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com for iOS or the Play Store order history for Android. We can't process subscription refunds on our end because we never see the money — it goes through the app stores.
What happens to my data if I cancel Pro?
Nothing is deleted. Your sessions, history, buddies, and wallet stay intact — you just lose access to Pro-tier features (long sessions, pledge circles, archived commits). Resubscribe anytime and everything is back.
Account
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. Your data will be removed within 30 days. Remaining wallet balance will be refunded.
How do I change my username?
Profile → Edit Profile → Username. You can change it once every 30 days (anti-impersonation cooldown). Buddies who knew your old username are automatically updated; old session screenshots in the wild won't be.
I forgot my password — how do I reset it?
On the login screen tap Forgot password. We'll email a reset link to the address on file. If you don't see it within 5 minutes, check spam. The link works for 24 hours then expires for security.
How do I enable two-factor authentication?
Settings → Privacy → Two-factor authentication. We support TOTP apps (Authy, 1Password, Google Authenticator). Scan the QR code, enter the 6-digit code to verify, and save the recovery codes somewhere safe (NOT in the app — that defeats the point).
What data do you collect about me?
Email, username, session timestamps + durations, buddy connections, financial transactions (encrypted), and crash/diagnostic logs (anonymized). We don't track location, read your contacts beyond optional friend-finding, or sell data to third parties. Full details in our privacy policy.
Can I export my data?
Yes — Settings → Privacy → Export my data. We email a JSON archive of every record we hold about you (sessions, pledges, wallet history, buddies) within 24 hours. GDPR / CCPA-compliant.
What happens when I delete my account?
Personal data (email, username, display name, profile photo) is removed within 24 hours. Aggregated session data is retained for 90 days for fraud investigation, then permanently deleted. Wallet balance must be $0 before deletion is allowed — either withdraw it or contact support to forfeit.
Credits & rewards
What are Nomp Credits?
Credits are an in-app currency you earn by completing sessions, maintaining streaks, and referring friends. They're not legal tender — they can be redeemed for Pro upgrades or non-cash rewards (gift cards, donations, discount codes) through our manual admin review process.
How do I earn credits?
+5 per session completed, +20 for hitting a weekly streak (5 sessions in 7 days), +50 when a friend you referred signs up (you both get them), bonus credits for major milestones (10th, 50th, 100th session). The Credits screen in Settings shows your full history.
How do I redeem credits?
Settings → Credits → Request a reward. Pick reward kind (gift card / discount code / charity donation), enter amount, describe what you want. We review within 2 business days. Minimum 500 credits per request.
How much is a credit worth?
Roughly 1¢ each (500 credits ≈ $5 reward value) but exact exchange rate varies by reward kind. Gift cards typically convert at full value; physical merch may carry a fulfillment surcharge. You see the proposed reward before we deduct credits.
Do credits expire?
No. Credits never expire. They stay on your account as long as your account is active. We may forfeit credits on accounts inactive for 24+ months but we'll email you 60 days before that happens.
Notifications
How do I turn off notifications?
Settings → Notifications. You can disable everything or pick by type: session reminders, buddy activity, pledge resolutions, marketing. Disabling pledge-resolution emails is not recommended — you'll miss the receipt for any money movement.
Why am I getting emails I didn't opt into?
Transactional emails (pledge results, withdrawal confirmations, password resets, security alerts) are sent regardless of your marketing preferences because they're required for the app to function safely. Marketing emails are opt-in only and you can turn them off in Settings → Notifications.
Troubleshooting
The app won't open or keeps crashing — what now?
Three steps in order: (1) force-quit and reopen, (2) update to the latest version in the App Store / Play Store, (3) restart your phone. If it still won't open, email support@mynomp.com with your phone model + OS version + what you were doing when it crashed.
My wallet balance looks wrong
First, pull-to-refresh on the Wallet screen — the app might just be showing a cached value. If the discrepancy persists, screenshot your wallet history (Settings → Wallet → Transactions) and email support@mynomp.com. We run nightly reconciliation that catches any drift between displayed balance and actual ledger.
I completed my session but it's showing as failed
This usually means the app detected you switched away during the session, even briefly. If you're sure you didn't (or had a verifiable interruption like a phone call), reply to the failure email or contact support — we can review session logs and forgive isolated incidents.
My buddy didn't get the notification
Check that they've enabled push notifications for Nomp in their phone settings (push notifications are opt-in on first launch — easy to miss). They also won't see notifications for sessions you set to private. If neither applies, ask them to log out and back in to refresh the push token.
How do I contact support?
Open the Help Center (Settings → Help) and submit a ticket. We respond within one business day. For urgent issues (account locked, suspected fraud, withdrawal in flight), email support@mynomp.com directly.
